Question 1

Does my server run Build 42 or Build 41?

Accepted Answer

New servers run Build 42, the stable version since July 2026. You can switch to Build 41 in the control panel for older worlds and mods. The server will not open a world from the other build, so your save cannot be damaged by a wrong switch.

Question 2

How many players can a Project Zomboid server handle?

Accepted Answer

Up to 32 players play smoothly. More is possible, but the game itself warns about map streaming and desync above 32 players.

Question 3

Can I install Steam Workshop mods?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Enter the Workshop item IDs and mod IDs in the control panel. The server downloads them when it starts, and players get them automatically when they join.

Question 4

How much memory do I need?

Accepted Answer

Project Zomboid runs on Java and needs more memory as players explore and as you add mods. 6 GB suits a small group; 12 GB or more is recommended for 16 or more players or large mod lists. The server's Java memory follows your plan automatically.

Question 5
