How to change my server type?

Picked Vanilla when you ordered but want Paper for plugins, or Fabric for mods? The Versions page reinstalls your server with different server software, or a different Minecraft version, in a few clicks. Before you switch, it is smart to create a backup so you can always go back.

1Open the Versions Page

• Log in to your game panel and click your server.
• In the left menu, click Versions under GAME SERVER.
• Under Select server type you see every supported software: Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Purpur, Pufferfish, Folia, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt, Mohist, Arclight, Sponge, Leaves, Canvas and the proxies Velocity, BungeeCord and Waterfall. Each card shows how many Minecraft versions and builds are available, and tags like BETA or DEPRECATED where they apply.

2Pick a Version

• Click the software you want. All available versions are listed with a RELEASE label and their number of builds, newest first.
• Use Search version... to jump to a specific version, or switch on Show snapshots if you are after a development build.
• Back to server types at the top takes you back to the overview.

3Choose a Build and Install

• Click the version you want and an install window opens.
• Most types have a Build dropdown; the newest stable build is preselected, so you can normally leave it alone. Vanilla has no builds to choose from.
• Decide about Wipe server files first. Leave it off to keep your worlds and files, which is fine when you stay in the same family, for example Paper to a newer Paper version. Switch it on for a clean install, which we recommend when you move to a completely different type, for example from a plugin server to a modded one. Wiping deletes every file on the server and cannot be undone, so make that backup first.
• Press Install (the button reads Wipe and install when the wipe toggle is on).

4Wait for the Installation

• A progress screen walks through the steps: stopping the server, downloading the server files and configuring everything.
• Installation complete with the line "Your server has been updated to ..." means the new server type is ready.

Finished

Press Start on the Console page and your server boots with the new software. Note that a newer Minecraft version can need a newer Java version: if the console reports UnsupportedClassVersionError, pick a higher Docker image on the Startup page under CONFIGURATION and start again.
