How to Add Tags to Your Rust Server

Tags tell the Rust server browser what kind of server you run: PvE, creative, a weekly wipe cycle, and so on. Players filter by them, so the right tags put your server in front of the players you want.

There are two ways to set them: through the panel (recommended, applied on every boot) or from the in-game console.

  • Log in to the game panel and open your Rust server.
  • Click Startup in the left menu under CONFIGURATION.
  • Scroll down to the Variables section and find the Additional Arguments card.
  • Add the tags argument to the field, after anything already in it, separated by a space:
+server.tags "pve,weekly"
  • Replace the example tags with your own, separated by commas without spaces. Rust only recognizes tags from the official list on the Rust Wiki.
  • Changes are saved automatically; a small spinner appears next to the variable name while the panel saves.

  • Restart your server to apply. Because the tags are part of the startup command, they are set again on every boot, so they survive updates and wipes.

Alternative: Set Tags From the In-Game Console

You can also change tags live, without a restart. This requires admin on your Rust server.

  • Press F1 in game to open the console and enter your tags:
server.tags "pve,weekly"

  • Then enter server.writecfg so the change is saved.

  • The server browser should show the new tags within a minute or so. If it does not, restart your server.

If you use both methods, prefer the Startup page: the startup command runs on every boot and is what your server keeps coming back to.

Finished

Your server now advertises its tags in the Rust server browser. While you are on the Startup page, the Server Name, Description, URL and Server Image variables let you dress up the rest of your server listing the same way.
